I was just searching on Youtube to find some videos from established popstars but stumbled on "Stop Me" by Phonetix. To be honest i'm not the biggest hip hop fans particularly modern hip hop but i'm a sucker for old skool grooves. "Stop Me" has an amazing groove track which the boys rap over. They are a bit rough round the edges but very UK and thats their appeal. I went straight to their Myspace and also their website and guys just a bit of advice make sure your website looks better than your Myspace page because we like to link to your website wherever possible. I liked what I heard. They could do with some vocal development but they have a knack of finding great melodic soulful breaks which is a relief in Hip Hop today. One to watch !
The first thing i gotta say is that Joe is one of my artists that i am producing and working with at Y:K Records Studio. So before i plug him on this site i want you all to know that. I have known Joe Naim (The Egyptian George Michael) for about 2 years now and in that time he has matured as a person, an artist, and as a friend. I have to say this young lad is going to be big, huge, massive ! Vocally i can hear traces of George Michael, Craig David (we started off doing r&b songs) and now Josh Groban. Ok his voice isn't as strong as Josh's but thats fine. Over the years and with the help of Melbourne's best vocal coach Cosimo Ciccone www.cicconeacademy.com, Joe has come into his own as a singer. Before the Pussycat Dolls, before Destiny's Child and way before The Spice Girls, The Mary Jane Girls strutted their stuff and made sexy funky music. Proteges of the late Rick James, they were fantastic. Not as polished as the Dolls but without them, there would be no Pussycat Dolls. "In My House" got to the top of the US charts in 1985 and the band are the most sampled girl band in history.
This is what happens when you try to copy something that was brilliant first time around but neither have the same talent or budget. It is full of cliches and the video really made me laugh. I don't mind the song itself, i think Miss Nic’ola has a really nice pop voice but they should have steered away from the 'bling' and made a decent video in the UK rather than this one. As for the rap... well let just say 0 points. Good singing, decent tune but 'orrible rap and video.
