I was going to wrap today's edition of myhotmusic alerts until i stumbled on this monster of a hit. This is going to be huge because it has something for everyone. Continuing with the unintentional carribean feel of today's selection, Lily Allen has a huge hit on her hands and Parlophone are rush releasing this single. Just a little over 10 years ago there was a reggae explosion, with breakout acts including Shaggy, Pato Banton, China Black, CJ Lewis and more. Well perhaps we are now going to experience a new resurgence of Carribean pop music. We've already had hits from Sean Paul, Kevin Little and now Barbados' Beauty Rihanna has joined the fray. Already with a couple of huge hits including "Pon de Replay" and the new electro influenced "SOS", she is as sweet as she is sexy, gorgeous but also brilliant. I have chosen this track "Here i go again" from her first album "Music in the Sun" as it has all that is great about reggae music in it. But go ahead and buy the album, in fact buy both albums as they are both fantastic.
Searching was a big hit for this UK duo in 1994, selling over 200,000 copies and spending 16 weeks in the top 75. It was already an underground hit in it's original version, topping the Choice FM reggae charts 2 years earlier. What i really love about this song is the lush string arrangement, produced by Mykaell S Riley. What Mykaell did was to turn this reggae hit into a huge international hit by introducing String arrangements, Pizzicato String and of course the piano. 1994 was one of the best years for UK Reggae music. It spawned many hits from Chaka Demus and Pliers, Shaggy, Pato Banton and let's not forget Ace of Base.
It's catchy, it's infectious , it's sweet, it's the Sugababes. This is one pop group that have always had a knack of winning people over. I still remember seeing them many many moons ago at a showcase, where they were being hailed as the perfect successors to the Spice Girls. I wasn't convinced then, they looked like a bunch of schoolgirls who couldnt be bothered and that was that as far as i was concerned. In fact i ignored the Sugababes until after Siobhan walked and not until 'Round Round' was released did they suddenly prick my taste buds, i was hooked after that. Then came 'Hole in the head', 'In the middle' and 'Push the button' is one of those Sugababes songs that just won't leave your head. So if you are one of those remote people out there who have not heard this song by now, tune into the myhotmusic webcast and dance your ass off.
House music goes through different phazes some good, some bad, but there is a return to early 90's disco influenced club numbers of which "make a move on me" is at the forefront. Not only does it have that retro feel, it also sounds very current and has excellent and powerful vocals. If you can, listen to the extended version which builds up very nicely. An excellent 9/10 for me.
